Discutiamo, discutiamo - Locarno Conversations

Discutiamo, discutiamo offers a selection of conversations with some of the most brilliant directors, actors and film professionals who, as guests of the Locarno Film Festival, share their experiences, ideas and visions in order to inspire new creators.

As part of the special edition Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films, focusing on the exchange and development of ideas for the cinema of tomorrow, we looked back on the reflections made by guests in past editions. Discutiamo, discutiamo offers a selection of conversations with some of the most brilliant directors, actors and film professionals who, as guests of the Locarno Film Festival, share their experiences, ideas and visions in order to inspire new creators.

Starting in 1995 – the year of the round table dedicated to the relationship between cinema and history, spearheaded by Jean-Luc Godard – we traverse 25 years of cinema and Festival history, all the way to 2019, when Albert Serra met the "Pope of Trash" John Waters.

The conversations were part of the online events lineup of the Locarno 2020 program and are available on this website and on the YouTube channel of the Locarno Film Festival channel after the end of this year’s Festival.

The Films After Tomorrow

The Locarno 2020 initiative to restart cinema: twenty feature-length projects to be completed, ten international and ten Swiss, two special Pardi, and other awards. And, for the audience, a journey through the Festival’s history with films chosen by the selected directors.

The younger audience once again has a starring role at the Locarno Film Festival via the Locarno Kids HomeMade Movies project: alongside their families, children are invited to discover the magical world of stop-motion animation and make their first film.

Supporting Cinemas

The future of films also depends on movie theaters. Locarno 2020, an edition conceived to stand with the film industry, cannot fail to reach out to the hallowed grounds of the viewing experience, with initiatives that aim to keep the invaluable Swiss theatrical circuit alive.

Fuori orario

Two nights of screenings – August 9 and 14 – to pay homage to the great auteur cinema supported by the Locarno Film Festival: here is the programme for Fuori orario. Cose (mai) viste, historic cinematic content broadcast in Italy on Rai 3, including previews, rediscoveries and surprising archive material.

Photo Exhibition

73 years’ worth of magic and history tied to the Locarno Film Festival lives on in the photographs capturing memorable Piazza Grande moments. With the support of La Posta, this open-air exhibition brings the Festival back to life in the captivating Piazza Grande location.

Padrini&Madrine

Fourteen international filmmakers, already known also for their previous appearances at Locarno to present their films, will engage in a conversation with the selected short filmmakers of Pardi di domani, critiquing their work and exchanging ideas and points of view on directing practice.

Il Pardo a casa tua

With Il Pardo a casa tua Italian Swiss broadcaster RSI will bring twelve historic films from Piazza Grande directly to viewers via its channels and streaming platform, allowing some of the magical emotions of one of the world’s biggest screens to come alive on the small screen at home during Locarno 2020.
