The educational initiative of the Festival is aimed at students aged between 18 and 21 . Among the participants of Cinema&Gioventù are designated the youth juries called to evaluate the official competitions of the Locarno Film Festival.
Cinema&Gioventù is an initiative open to 28 students who are in their final year of high school or vocational school, aged 18–23, and come from Switzerland and Northern Italy. These young participants in the Locarno Film Festival become privileged viewers: they watch the screenings, meet directors and actors/actresses, attend specially organized introductory lectures on film language and have access to the sidebar events.
Participants in Cinema&Gioventù also take part in the three Youth Juries that judge the Locarno Film Festival’s official competitions: the Concorso internazionale, the Concorso Cineasti del presente and the short film competition Pardi di domani (Swiss and international short films). And, in this special edition of Locarno 2020, the competitions The Films of Tomorrow, Pardi di domani and Open Doors Screenings.
History and organization
Cinema&Gioventù is an initiative of the Canton of Ticino’s Department of Education, Culture and Sport (Dipartimento dell’educazione, della cultura e dello sport: DECS), created in 1960 as “cinema study days”, aimed at Swiss students. Since 2012, Cinema&Gioventù is part of the Locarno Academy, thus joining forces with the Locarno Film Festival’s educational project. Starting from 2014 the initiative is organized in collaboration with Castellinaria – Festival del cinema giovane.
The juries of Locarno 2020 are designated among the participants in the Cinema&Gioventù initiative and are organized by Castellinaria – Festival del cinema giovane on behalf of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport (DECS) and also with the support of the Department of Territory (DT) of the Canton Ticino for the “Ambiente è qualità di vita“ (Environment is quality of life) award.

The Jury, composed of Isabella Corsini, Ludovico Romagnoli, Sara Luna Mobiglia, Malika Brigadoi, Ludovic Solioz, Manuel Gobet, Neva Kammeramann, Lydia Cuda and Zoé Lötscher, will present the following prizes:
The masterclass dedicated to young Swiss cinema introduces us to two Swiss directors who are also former participants of the Locarno Filmmakers Academy 2020: Cyril Schäublin and Elie Grappe. These two promising directors will dialogue with a group of young cinema enthusiast of Cinema e Gioventù.
