Locarno Film Festival · Schools Without Borders

For a dozen years, the Locarno Film Festival has been promoting a review of films made by young filmmakers during their training at national and international film and audiovisual schools. The CISA, academic partner of the Locarno Film Festival, has always coordinated the event by inviting Swiss and international film schools to present a selection of their best short films, for a fruitful exchange between universities and vocational schools from different regions, also working in synergy with the BaseCamp. Recent graduation shorts films from CISA (Locarno), ZHdK (Zurich), HSLU (Lucerne), ECAL (Lausanne) and HEAD (Geneva) will be screened, as well as a selection of essays from USI (Lugano and Mendrisio), and a tribute to CILECT.

CISA

CISA (International Academy of Audiovisual Sciences), founded by Pio Bordoni in 1992 and now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is a two-year Professional Education and Training college followed by one year of specialization (in directing, cinematography, sound, editing, creative producer) leading to the federal post-diploma of Filmmaker

ZHdK

The ZHdK (Zurich University of the Arts) offers a bachelor's program in which students experience filmmaking from conception to screening, while the master's program explores study and practice in fiction and documentary filmmaking, screenwriting, camera and photography direction, editing, and creative production.

ECAL

The ECAL (École cantonale d'art de Lausanne)’s bachelor's program in cinema is aimed at students who are interested in all genres of film and the moving image: fiction, documentaries, experimental films, communication, television programs and video clips.

ECAL and HEAD have set up a shared master's program to explore areas such as directing, writing, editing, sound and production.

HEAD

The Haute école d'Arts appliqués (HEAD) with its bachelor in cinema, allows students to discover the diversity between documentary and fiction, exploring cross-genre hybrid areas and emphasizing documentary films.

HSLU

The HSLU (Lucerne School of Art and Design) offers, among others, a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Film, focusing on cross-media platforms and visual storytelling ranging from animation and forms of cinematic documentation in the age of the internet to digital displays.

USI

The USI (Università della Svizzera Italiana), in addition to an existing course about filming architecture, has from this year activated a collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival thanks to a joint chair given to the Professor for the Future of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts.

The event will be held under the aegis of CILECT (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et Télévision), which includes the 180 most prestigious film schools in the world, such as CISA, ZHdK, ECAL and HEAD.
